Ivan Avgustovich Veltz

(1866-1926)

Ivan Avgustovich Veltz was born in Saratov in the family of an Austrian merchant in 1866. Veltz was granted Russian citizenship in 1889. He entered Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1885, and studied landscape art there under the guidance of M.K. Klodt. After graduating from the Academy with a gold medal in 1892, he went abroad and visited Italy, Germany and Switzerland in 1892–1894. After returning to Russia he often exhibited his works at different exhibitions, for example, at the exhibitions organized by the “Petrograd Society of Artists”. Besides, Veltz often travelled about the southern provinces of the country and became very popular for his magnificent Russian landscapes. In 1909 Veltz became a member of the “Kuinjii Society” and took part in the exhibitions organized by this society. He died in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in 1926.
