Leo Feliksovich Lagorio

(1827-1905)

Leo Feliksovich Lagorio, a Russian painter, was born on June 16, 1827 in Feodisia. His father was an Italian, who was the Neapolitan Consul in Feodosia. Lagoria received general education in the local gymnasium. His talent became apparent in early age. The governor A. I. Kaznacheev noticed Lagorio’s talent and took him to Petersburg. In 1842 Lagorio entered the Academy of Arts with the help of the governor. The young artist studied under M. Vorobiev and G. P. Villevalde. In 1850 Lagorio graduated from the Academy with silver and gold medals. The artist was sent to the Caucasus, where he studied the mountain nature for the one year. In 1852 Lagorio went to Italy, where he spent 8 years, and returned to Russia as a skilful artist. In 1860 Lagorio became the professor because the paintings he created in Italy and brought to Russia were highly appreciated. Later Lagorio lived and worked mostly in Petersburg, sometimes he travelled in Russia to make sketches. In 1977-1978 the artist painted the set of paintings, devoted to Russian-Turkish war. Lagorio died on December 9, 1905 in Petersburg.
