Claude Oscar Monet

(1840-1926)

Claude Oscar Monet, a founder of French impressionist painting, was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, where he got Artistic Education (from 1859). He took lesson in Sues’ studio, and then studied under C. Gleyre. Monet got acquainted with some young artists who influenced his future art: Pissarro, Degas, Cezanne, Sisley, and Renoir. They created a new movement in art and the name of this movement originated from the name of Monet’s picture the “Impression: sunrise”, which was first exhibited at the first Impressionists exhibition. These new innovations were not admired by public, critics and impressionists’ works were bought for poor money or were not bought at all. Monet lived in absolutely poverty: sometimes he had no money to buy paints, brushes and even bread. He presented the government with his last 14 paintings, called “Nympheas”. In 1923 Monet became nearly blind. He was operated on. His sight improved. In 1926 in February Monet was still painting. But he suffered from lung cancer. He died on December 5th.
