Giovanni Fattori

(1825-1908)

Giovanni Fattori, a famous Italian artist, was born on September 6, 1825 in Livorno. He first studied art under Giuseppe Bezzuoli. In 1846 the artist entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. But in 1848-1849 he interrupted his studies to take part in Revolution in Italy. Then Fattori returned to Florence in 1850 and became one of the leaders of “Macchiaoli” movement. The representatives of this movement came out against academic style in art. In 1860-70 Giovanni lived in Livorno and painted landscapes, scenes of peasant life. He broke fresh ground in the history of Italian art. In 1869 he became a teacher in the Academy in Florence. In 1875 the artist visited Paris and got acquainted with impressionists’ art. Fattori died on August 30, 1908 in Florence.
