R. G. Sudkovsky

(1850-1885)

Rufim Gavrilovich Sudkovsky, a famous Russian marine-artist, an academician, was born in Ochakov on April 7, 1850. Firstly he studied at the seminary in Ochakov and then in Odessa. But in 1868 he left Odessa for Petersburg and entered the Academy of Arts. There he studied for three years and in 1870 received two silver medals. His three exhibitions in Petersburg (1882, 1883 and 1884) made him famous as a painter of seascapes. In 1882 Sudkovsky became the academician. He died in Odessa in 1885 at the age of 35. His works can be found in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery Moscow and the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg.
