There is no doubt that the marine theme is considered to be eternal. The ravishing, mysterious sea, which is known as the symbol of freedom, has been attracting people for many centuries. Especially it inspired poets, artists and composers to creating masterpieces. “The call of the sea has always sounded in mankind’s heart. Seconds and centuries, delights and wrecks, shouts and silence, all Earth’s past days and all its past history united in this unceasing sleepless call”, - wrote Robert Ivanovich Rozhdestvensky. Once according to the mysterious call the man left reliable and firm ground and stepped to changeable, frightening obscurity. Since then the struggle between the man and the free sea element has begun. This struggle has become the test of man’s character, and it has become his fate. In art the uneasy, restless and vivid sea is opposed to calm and quiet ground. Sea element is often compared with constantly changing, eternal and inscrutable time, human soul and extensive human life. Seascape is a special genre in painting. It is impossible to paint the variable sea without possessing an ability to use imagination. I. K. Aivazovsky said, that “the movement of natural elements is elusive. It is inconceivable to paint from life the lightning, the gust of wind or the splash of waves”. And so the skill of marine-artists, who can render all the beauty of the changeable sea, is considered to be great and striking.
